Coppertone Sunscreen

Sunscreen is a product that helps keeps your skin from getting sunburned by keeping the Sun’s rays away. Coppertone Sunscreen is made by a really famous company called Coppertone. They mainly make sunscreen.

Coppertone Sunscreen contains many ingredients including avobenzone, homosalate, octisalate and glycerin.  Most of these keep the Sun’s rays away and glycerin makes the sunscreen smooth.

I selected Coppertone sunscreen because I had feeling it was a good product.  I thought this sunscreen would have a score of a 2 or 1 maybe but when I saw Coppertone sunscreen, it scored a 7 out of 10. The reason why the sunscreen is bad is because of its ingredients, including oxybenzone, homosalate, and glycerin.

Oxybenzone gets a score of 8 because it is an endocrine disruptor.  For example, if your body was trying to grow, it might disrupt that signal.  So if you’re going to the beach and you use Coppertone Sunscreen, while it is keeping sunrays away, it is also giving you problems.

Another problem with oxybenzone is that if you are photoallergic, wearing oxybenzone can give you rashes from the sun and hives, which are pink REALLY itchy spots everywhere.  In a 2003 study done at Oregon Health and Science University, researchers found that oxybenzone can give hives, skin rashes and problems to people in the sun.

Sunscreen has a good chance of keeping you safe from the Sun.  I do not recommend that kids wear Coppertone Sunscreen though, because it is really bad for you. Baby sunscreen works for everybody.   Some alternative products are Babyganics Sunscreen, California Baby sunscreen, and Coola Suncare.  They don’t have oxybenzone or fragrance.  You can buy these products online or at some health food stores.
