Kraft Macaroni and Cheese has all of these traits but also has things inside you may want to worry about.
Kraft Macaroni and Cheese has many ingredients including cellulose gum and citric acid. Cellulose gum is extracted from wood pulp and cotton cellulose. Citric acid is a natural preservative and can be used to add an acidic taste to foods and drinks. Citric acid is used in Kraft Macaroni and Cheese to make it tasty.
Kraft Macaroni and Cheese receives a score of B- on Foodfacts.Com which is a pretty decent score. The ingredient that has been argued about a lot is Yellow #5, also called tartrazine. Yellow #5 is used to make the cheese color yellow so it can look appetizing.
In the online scientific newsmagazine Live Science, I read that Yellow #5 can lead to hyperactivity in some children. Hyperactivity means there is too much muscle activity, so you can’t sit still. On a recent ABC news report, consumers pleaded for Kraft to take out Yellow #5 because it can lead to hyperactivity.
A study that was conducted by the University of Melbourne in 1994 showed that Yellow#5 led to hyperactivity. Their results showed that children became more irritable, restless and had trouble sleeping after consuming Yellow #5.
European studies in 2010 by scientists Pestana, Moreira, and Olej said that eating 35 mg of Yellow #5 did not hurt the respiratory or cardiovascular systems of the people they studied, meaning that they say it’s safe to have in products. However Yellow #5 is banned in some European countries.
There are many kinds of Macaroni and Cheese and some may not be the best. Kraft’s isn’t the best because it has Yellow #5. Yellow #5 is not good for you. There are some healthier choices you can find. A healthy alternative you can buy is Annie’s Organic Macaroni and Cheese. It has NO artificial coloring and is organic which in my opinion makes it a healthier choice than Kraft Macaroni and Cheese.
