This deodorant is a skin care product that makes you smell “manly” and what man wouldn’t like to smell fresh and be fresh all day? Chemical ingredients work together and try to stop you from smelling stinky when sweating. This deodorant works by turning the dial so the stick can come up and then just apply it to your underarms.
It is always good to know what you are putting on your skin, right? So, these are the ingredients in Old Spice: Fragrance, Propylene Glycol, Tetrasodium EDTA, PPG-3 Myristyl Ether, Sodium Stearate, Diproplene Glycol, Blue 1 and Water.
Now, after reading that list of ingredients aren’t you a bit awed and puzzled on certain words? Was it like reading a book of unknown difficult words? Are you kind of worried that these ingredients will severely affect you? Well, don’t worry about these ingredients harming you. The grade for Old Spice Deodorant is 3 out of 10 on the rating scale created by the Environmental Working Group’s Cosmetic Database.
One ingredient, in particular, is terrible in this deodorant. This ingredient is fragrance, which earns a score of 8-10. The reason it is the worst is because it is known to cause serious allergies and damages your immune system which means that your immune system will start to die out. Fragrance is also known to make you lose your ability to smell.
In researching this article, I learned a lot about fragrance. Did you know that there are at least 5,000 different chemicals used by the fragrance industry in products? Out of those 5,000 chemicals approximately 20% have been tested and reported toxic.
There have also been a number of studies about how fragrance can affect the brain. In the studies, people learned that fragranced products can cross the blood brain barrier. With the fragrance crossing the barrier, it can possibly damage brain tissue. This would be called neurotoxicity since it is damaging the brain. I got this information from an article online about fragrance called “Sweet Poison: What your nose can’t tell you about the dangers of perfume,” by Andrea DesJardins (Copyright 1997). In this article, it explained that the FDA has little control over the fragrance industry also it says the FDA knows little about the health effects on fragranced products because they don’t require manufacturers to prove their products are safe.
In a 2013 study on fragrance led by the Danish Research Centre for Chemical Sensitivities called “Chemical Intolerance Among Hairdressers in Denmark”, hairdressers were compared with regular people to see how they responded to fragrance. Their symptoms were the same as those in the normal population. But, former hairdressers experienced more trouble with fragrance than regular people. All this exposure to fragrance may have made them more sensitive.
Other ingredients in Old Spice may cause you to have certain reactions like itching uncontrollably if your body is sensitive to certain chemicals. For example, Propylene Glycol is a small alcohol that can cause your skin to get very irritated. Tetrasodium EDTA 2-10 is a colorless, organic compound that dissolves in water that might affect the ability of people to have kids.
PPG-3 Myristyl Ether 1-10 is a skin conditioning agent known to be an environmental toxin. Sodium Stearate, commonly found in soap and types of solid deodorant, is a naturally occurring fatty acid and a cleansing agent, viscosity agent and emulsifying agent. It is also known to be an environmental toxin. Dipropylene Glycol is part of fragrance so you would call it a fragrance ingredient. It has a viscosity decreasing agent and it may engender skin irritation depending on the usage of the ingredient. Blue 1 is a dye.
Based on my study of this product, I wouldn’t recommend Old Spice to little kids because kids are still developing and don’t get sweaty as much as teens. Some ingredients may even cause allergic reactions because some kids may be sensitive to certain chemicals.
In my opinion Old Spice Pure Sport Deodorant is not that bad for teens and adults. These ingredients are not harmful unless your skin is sensitive to certain chemicals in products and if you love to smell manly, then go get some Old Spice Deodorant.
If after reading this article you would like to use something different than Old Spice Pure Sport, I would recommend a natural deodorant without these chemicals going on your skin. The name of the natural deodorant I recommend is called Arm & Hammer Essentials Natural Deodorant. It is aluminum free and paraben-free. It uses baking soda and natural plant extracts to fight odor.
